We have been very active in our recent #CompGoesGreen campaign and that continued with our workshop today with thanks to the Green Schools Committee and Ms. Kelleher. A big thank you to Clare CoCo and Daithí Lavelle from ‘Leave No Trace’
who held a workshop with TYs on the concept of Leave no Trace and how to reduce our impact on the environment around us. Our students enjoyed learning from Daithí and his knowledge on all things environmental and they completed their workshop with a litter pick in the new Town Park. We look forward to working with them again in the future to continue our educational journey. Leave No Trace Ireland |
Wow, what can we say about our Christmas Market ? We are privileged to be a part of such an amazing community whose support and encouragement was clear to see at our market. The crowds, the atmosphere and the spirit of the evening were unbelievable. We hope that you enjoyed the night as much as we did.
An event such as this does not take place without a massive amount of work and dedication and we had that in spades. To our amazing ‘Christmas Market Team’ who pull off this incredible feat each year in a bid to hold a community event and help our local charities, the school thanks you! To our wonderful student and staff volunteers who amazed us with their spirit and work ethic. We had a very long and challenging day and their cheer continued right until the end of the day and beyond that to clean up this morning. We must thank our committed and faithful stallholders who joined with us in support of our charities. Thank you all. Last night we were also aided by Shannon Fire Brigade brigade, Chris walsh from hippo sound and lighting and smithstown DIY. Thanks to you and to all those who donated prizes for our raffle. Two of the highlights of the evening were our fantastic Santa and his elves and the Non Nobis choir. Thank you! We were delighted to have SPIN South West helping to add to the Christmas Cheer too. Our photography club volunteers have captured the spirit of the night here and more photos will follow as we get them 😉 Thanks one and all! |

Staff, students and parents of St Patrick’s Comprehensive School, past & present, send their heartiest congratulations to a true gentleman Áedan McFall as he received an All Ireland Scholarship Award from JP & Noreen McManus in a ceremony in UL today with guest of honour Joe Schmidt. Áedan completed his Leaving Certificate in June 2019 and follows in his sister Elora’s illustrious footsteps in studying in UL. Younger sister Freya is currently in 2nd year and will be performing in Legally Blonde in early December. Áedan was supported as always by his proud grandparents and parents - Sarah and Jim. It was an honour for Principal Mary Costello to represent ‘The Comp’ at the ceremony- Áedan was enthusiastic in his praise of the staff in the school and how they supported, guided and mentored him on his journey. We will watch with pleasure Áedan’s academic journey and the amazing contributions he is bound to make - well done and congratulations from all of us at ‘The Comp’

We held our first meeting of the new Comp Photography Club today and we were in for a shock with the turn out! Thanks to all the students who gave up their time after school to begin their photography journey. There should be a significant improvement in some of the photos on the page here over the next few months now that our students are behind the cameras. 😉😂👍 We’re already looking forward to our next meeting on Wednesday.

We are wishing luck to a past pupil Elora who is involved in a fantastic project and has an upcoming workshop. We hope to see Elora back here at The Comp again soon.
The SOPHia project took form when Elora McFall had the great idea of promoting physics to school students. She was shocked at how few girls were doing physics in University and wanted to change this. She and a group of fellow students worked with staff in UL to come up with the SOPHia school visit workshop. From there it has grown to a regional project, funded by Science Foundation Ireland. The SOPHia project is hosting a one day showcase event aimed at supporting teachers to encourage diversity in physics. The event will take place in the University of Limerick on Saturday, November 23rd 2019. It is also a great opportunity to learn about the careers and opportunities that physics opens up. More details on their website here. http://sophiaphysics.ie |
Well done to all our TYs who helped to fundraise for the Irish Wheelchair Association in the town centre last week. #CommunitySpirit

We are thankful to Ruairí and Olaf (2 of the founding members of our Photography Club) in 5th year for their photography and photoshop skills. A special thanks to Ei Electronics for coming on board as our main sponsor for our production! We are extremely grateful for your support.

Thomas O Hara from Cys and Ms. Akers met the 5th year mentors for a working lunch. Whilst enjoying their Pizza Party, they brainstormed what the mentoring program has meant to them so far, what has worked well and strategies on how it can be improved. This dedicated group of mentors meet 1st year students every Wednesday during their lunch times, engage in activities and offer support. They have taken their leadership roles very seriously. Thank you to all involved in the Cara Mentoring Programme!

Science Week at The Comp continues with its annual show of fantastic explosive experiments by Ms. Shannon. First year students enjoyed watching money burn, learned about forensic analysis and watched the fireball that is the whoosh bottle! Across the week all students have been enjoying experiments, science simulations online and the famous rocket balloon race! Science is the key to our future so it’s great to see so many inquisitive minds here at The Comp 👩⚕️👨⚕️🚀🔬

GAA Future Leaders We were delighted to welcome Eoghan Hanley to The Comp today as part of the Future Leader programme. St. Caimins will also join us to work on a pilot project with Wolfe Tones to explore how the work accomplished through the Future Leaders Programme might be transferred to local clubs. Eoghan met with our TYs this morning in the school library along with past pupil Hayleigh Nolan for a great morning of debate and discussion. It is wonderful to see both secondary schools involved in such a worthwhile initiative. Thank you Wolfe Tones na Sionna GAA Club 👍👏 GAA Future Leaders St. Caimin's Community School

The clouds parted and the sun shone on Thursday as the cast of Legally Blonde took to the streets of Shannon to participate in a 5k sponsored walk.
The students raised a lot of money over the last number of weeks and completed their walk with great energy and enthusiasm. Thanks to all who supported them and we look forward to your continued support for our next fundraising venture on Nov. 7th. We're holding a Table Quiz in our school canteen starting at 7.30pm and all are welcome. |
There was great excitement here in the library for our annual Student Council Elections. Our students cast the all important votes for their preferred candidates after some very competitive campaigns. We are very proud of the contribution our Student Council make to the school and would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved for their dedication and diligence thus far and wish luck to all our incoming members.

Primary school visitsMs. Costello and Ms. Brooks have begun their visits to the local primary schools ahead of our ‘Open Evening’ on October 24th. The tour on Friday was thoroughly enjoyed and they are looking forward to visiting even more primary schools this week. Students are getting copies of our brand new prospectus ‘Dóchas’ and we hope it gives you an insight into the truly rare and remarkable school we have here in The Comp.

A message from our TY Digital Media Literacy class. #TY #DML
Our TYs have been busy surveying the 1st years on their digital media use and collating the data from their anonymous survey. The TYs have honed their computer, interpersonal and maths skills over the last few weeks. The results have been compiled into this infographic showing digital media use amongst 1st years and some of the results are concerning. With this is mind, TYs have begun to construct a presentation that will be made to all first years about digital media. It will look at the benefits, pitfalls and strategies in how to stay safe online. We urge you to have a conversation around social media with your children. Webwise Ireland have a great resource in their Parental Guide available at the following link: https://www.webwise.ie/parents/ |
